This plan builds a 36-inch-wide, 12-inch-deep, 25 1/2-inch-high three-tier shoe rack. It uses two 3/4-inch plywood sides, three shelves, and two rear rails. Measure the entryway and footwear first, cut accurately, predrill, assemble on a flat surface, check square after every shelf, then finish and anchor the rack if children could climb or pull on it.
The sample size holds roughly three adult pairs per tier, depending on shoe width. Every critical dimension, part, and fastener count is stated below. The rack is storage furniture, not a bench, step, climbing frame, or structural assembly.
Adaptable finished size

For a different width, use shelf and rail length = desired outside width − twice the actual side thickness. A panel sold as 3/4 inch may be slightly thinner, so measure it. For deeper footwear, make the side panels 13 or 14 inches deep and keep shelves about 3/4 inch shallower to leave room at the rear.

Material estimate
The seven plywood parts have a combined face area of about 13.8 square feet: 4.25 square feet for both sides, 8.09 square feet for three shelves, and 1.44 square feet for two rails. Adding 15% for saw kerf, edge cleanup, and layout brings the planning area to about 15.9 square feet. One 4 × 8-foot sheet contains 32 square feet, so it provides enough area for the base plan with room to arrange grain direction and reject a damaged edge. Area alone does not prove every layout fits; sketch the sheet and include blade kerf before cutting.

- Primer and paint, or a compatible clear finish
- An anti-tip strap or bracket with fasteners approved for the actual wall construction

Dimensions are examples, not tested load ratings. Wider shelves, seating, or unusually heavy storage require a separate structural check. For a wall-mounted design, use a purpose-designed mounting system rather than removing the sides from this freestanding plan.
Build the shoe rack
- Measure the space and shoes. Check door swing, trim, baseboards, vents, the longest footwear, and the tallest boot. Draw the adjusted plan.
- Lay out the sheet. Mark every part, show blade kerf, orient the best faces outward, and keep grain direction visually consistent.
- Cut equal parts together. Support the sheet fully. Cut sides first, then use one setup for all shelves and one for both rails.
- Mark shelf positions as a pair. Clamp sides with bottom and front edges flush. Carry the 3-, 12 1/2-, and 22-inch shelf-top lines across both inside faces with a square.
- Prepare visible edges. Sand cut edges, ease sharp corners, and apply edge banding before assembly if used. Keep glue surfaces flat.
- Dry-fit. Clamp the first shelf on a flat surface, confirm outside width, and compare diagonal measurements. Mark every pilot hole.
- Glue and fasten shelves. Predrill and countersink through the sides into each shelf edge. Drive three screws per side across two sides and three shelves uses 18 shelf screws. Do not overtighten into plywood edges.
- Add both rear rails. Place one below the top shelf and one below the middle shelf. Use two screws through each side into each rail: four screws per rail and 8 rail screws total. With the shelf screws, this makes 26 screws for the base butt-joint plan.
- Check square and finish. Compare diagonals before glue cures. Sand, remove dust, and follow coating instructions for ventilation, recoat, and full cure.
- Anchor the rack. Attach the upper rail to framing or an anchor rated for the wall and expected load. Follow the hardware instructions.
Assembly options
The 26-screw count applies only to the base butt-joint plan above. Pocket-hole, dado, and cleat variants use different layouts and hardware quantities; calculate their fasteners from the selected method.
- Predrilled screws and glue: simplest and the basis of this plan. Test pilot and countersink sizes on scrap.
- Pocket holes: place them on shelf undersides and hidden rail faces. Follow the jig manufacturer's guidance for actual panel thickness.
- Dados: two 1/4-inch-deep housings require each shelf to be 1/2 inch longer to retain the same outside width. Grooves must align exactly.
- Cleats: narrow supports beneath shelf ends are forgiving but visible.
- Center divider: useful to consider on the 48-inch variant; notch or divide shelves only from a redrawn cut list.

Common mistakes and corrections
- Using nominal panel thickness: measure it, then subtract twice that value from the outside width.
- Changing to dados without changing shelf length: add the combined groove depth to each shelf.
- Skipping rear rails: retain both rails or engineer a suitable full back.
- Driving screws without pilots: plywood edges may split, bulge, or strip.
- Squaring only at the end: compare diagonals after the first shelf and after each rail.
- Loading uncured finish: follow the label's full cure time, not only its dry-to-touch time.
Finishing for an entryway
Paint is forgiving on patched plywood: seal exposed edges, use compatible primer, and add a washable topcoat. For clear finish, test an offcut because thin face veneers can sand through and take color unevenly. No indoor coating turns this rack into a standing-water tray; use a removable boot mat and wipe spills promptly.
Safety before you cut
Follow every tool, adhesive, finish, and anti-tip hardware instruction. Support a full sheet so the offcut cannot pinch a blade. Clamp guides rather than holding them near the cut. Disconnect power or remove the battery before blade or bit changes. Wear eye protection and use hearing and respiratory protection appropriate to the work. Ventilate adhesives and finishes. Handle oily finishing rags exactly as the product label directs because some can self-heat.
A freestanding rack can tip when climbed or pulled. Anchor it with hardware suitable for the wall; do not guess at capacity. The plan is for shoes only and has no seating or climbing rating.
